  • My public singer/songwriter debut

    Ever been blindsided?

(In the metaphorical sense that is...)

I have been.  Recently.  Saturday to be exact.

After going to see 17 Again (really cute. . . in a very awkward way) with some of my friends, we went over to my favorite coffee shop to hear some music.   The musicians are friends of mine: the head of my school's English department (one of my professors), his family (I know it sounds cheesy, but they play music together, and they're great), and a fellow grad student/writing center tutor.  (She is a fantastic writer, and, while I had heard all about her musical talents, I had never heard her play.)

So I showed up and was duly impressed by their combined musical might.  Mostly, they played folk-sounding stuff, and I loved it.  Then...well, my professor looked over at me.

"Cherity, how about you play a few songs?"

My eyes got all wide and scared.

He had heard me play before.  I was at his house with several other students, and, after I had had a drink or two and we had all listened to his family play, I acquiesced to his request and played a song or two.

Anyway, long story short, I played and sang.  The first two, I was really nervous.  After that, it wasn't so bad really.  Granted, since I didn't have my music in front of me, I fudged my way through some of the chord progressions, but I have what some would call a "big" voice, and I let it carry me.  Two of the songs were originals and two were covers.

A friend of mine took a video of some of it (the ones where I was nervous...which I think is fairly clear), and I'm going to try and get it posted.

Anyway - that's my exciting update.
